Guardianship

Illinois Guardianship and Advocacy Commission

The Probate Act was amended to require guardians of disabled adults to complete a training program as provided in Section 33.5 of the Guardianship and Advocacy Act, which outlines the responsibility of the guardian of the person and the rights of the person under guardianship. The amendment further requires the guardian to file with the court a certificate of completion one year from the date of issuance of letters of office. This was effective September 8, 2018. There are some exceptions listed in the statute, found at 755 ILCS 5/11a-12.  Training is available online at the following: https://www2.illinois.gov/sites/gac/Pages/default.aspx
